Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) can make every aspect of daily life more challenging, and maintaining good dental health is no exception. Vomiting, nausea, and food aversions can take a toll on your oral hygiene, but there are some practical steps you can take to protect your teeth during this time.

Top Tips for Protecting Your Dental Health During HG:

  1. Brush Twice Daily
If you can manage it, brush with fluoride toothpaste twice a day—ideally before bed and first thing in the morning. However, if mornings are difficult, brushing at any time that works for you is helpful.
  2. Use Alcohol-Free Mouthwash
Use mouthwash between brushings, but wait at least 20 minutes after brushing to allow the fluoride to absorb. Opt for an alcohol-free mouthwash, as alcohol can be too acidic and weaken your tooth enamel.
  3. Switch to Non-Foaming Toothpaste
Toothpaste with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) tends to foam and can taste strong, which might be uncomfortable during HG. Choose an SLS-free, tasteless toothpaste to make brushing more manageable.
  4. Clean Between Teeth
Whenever possible, use interdental brushes or floss to clean between your teeth. This helps remove debris that can build up in hard-to-reach areas.
  5. Rinse After Vomiting
Vomiting increases acidity in your mouth, which can damage your enamel. Rinse with water or a fluoride mouthwash after vomiting, but avoid brushing for at least 30 minutes so you don’t spread the acid across your teeth.
  6. Try a Water Flosser
A water flosser can help clean your mouth if brushing is difficult. They’re gentle and effective at removing food and plaque.
  7. Use a Soft Brush or a Children’s Toothbrush
If a regular toothbrush feels too harsh, try a soft-bristled brush or even a finger brush. A children’s toothbrush with a smaller head can also help if you’re struggling with nausea while brushing.
  8. Chew Sugar-Free Gum with Xylitol
Sugar-free gum containing xylitol can help restore the pH balance in your mouth and promote oral health. Drinking water regularly can also help neutralize acid, especially if you’re eating frequently.
  9. Choose Self-Cleansing Snacks
Crisp fruits and raw vegetables are great snack options if you can tolerate them, as they naturally help clean plaque from your teeth.

Preparing for another pregnancy

If you’re planning another pregnancy and have experienced HG before, there are some preventive steps you can take for your dental health:

  • Visit your dentist for a check-up and explain your history with HG.
  • Ask your dentist if you’re a candidate for a fluoride varnish application to help protect your teeth.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste with at least 1450 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride.
  • Ensure your routine dental X-rays are up to date before pregnancy.

Taking care of your dental health during HG can be tough, but these small adjustments can make a significant difference. Remember to listen to your body and do what feels manageable for you.
